The Extinct Fisherman

2022, series of 3, digital collage of photographs and text, archival pigment ink, each 100 x 70 cm, framed. Exhibition view: Simon Vogel, Galerie Nagel-Draxler, Cologne, 2022

When I showed a former fisherman the photographs of the cutter on which he had sailed the North and Baltic Seas for years – and which today is a so-called museum ship and is supposed to convey to younger generations the hardships of this profession which died out at the same time as the herring – this man spoke about confinement and alcohol, about loneliness and fear, about cold and violence. I asked him if there was nothing beautiful at all on the high seas. Then he laughed: oh no, he was talking about retraining measures, and self-starters, about politics and elections, about supermarket bargains and eternal TV. He's talking about 30 lonely years ashore. Sven Johne, 2022
