Mein Respekt.“ more
Marcello Ortega, Moskau (Russland), Student.
“Robinson, a rational example of industriousness, who methodically creates a comfortable world from absolutely nothing, while cultivating trade and work to civilize the native Friday to the practices of middle-class life. Impressive.” more
Marcello Ortega , Moscow (Russia), student. On the application form for the Moscow International Higher Business School, eighteen-year-old Marcello Ortega was asked about his very personal motivation for pursuing studies in business administration. And this he mastered with flying colors as well. Everything was perfect: grades, credentials, and even his highly original motivation. From 1,289 applicants, only 60 were selected from around the globe. Marcello Ortega was now one of these few. But—as he had to admit to himself—he had cheated a bit, for his true motivation lay elsewhere and was quite idiotic. It had to do with the joke that his friends and family always made: Are you a descendant of “Friday” or rather a “genetic Robinson”? This nonsense needed to be put to rest once and for all. His grandfather was always more relaxed in such things—he had always liked being a “Friday.” But his grandfather was also a Marxist. For many generations, Ortega’s family has been living on the Chilean Isla Más a Tierra, deep in the South Pacific. In the eighteenth century, the Scottish mariner Alexander Selkirk lived on this island for years in utter seclusion. Selkirk is considered to be the “historic Robinson,” having served as the template for Daniel Defoe’s epochal novel Robinson Crusoe. less
