In the early morning hours of October 7th, 2004, Falk Haberkorn and Sven Johne started their expedition to find utopia. On November 9th, 2004—15 years after the fall of the Berlin wall—after driving almost 8000 kilometers through Eastern Germany, their search came to an end. Utopia is in Niederlausitz: the Tropical Islands resort. more
The world’s largest free-standing hall. Once constructed in order to build the world’s largest airships in it. Yet the dream of flight failed. But in it’s place another one succeeded. Today, palm trees grow in the factory, and where there once were changing rooms for the workers, now a blue lagoon invites visitors for a swim. Even so, the island is in danger of going under. 4000 daily visitors are not enough for paradise. To keep the more than 100 meter high hall at the edge of the Spree forest tropically warm, more than body heat is necessary. Only if many more people look for their place in the sun will it be possible, in the future, to fulfill the dream of a better life. less
