Der Białowieża-Wald ist der letzte Tiefland-Urwald Europas – ein etwa 900 Quadratkilometer großer Rest der einstigen paneuropäischen Wildnis, heute ein abgeschirmtes Schutzgebiet. Kein Holzeinschlag, keine Jagd, keine Menschen. Aber Warnschilder: denn seit dem 12. März 1999 durchzieht die Nato-Außengrenze diesen Urwald, und seit dem 1. Mai 2004 ist hier auch die Außengrenze der Europäischen Union. Die innere Schutzzone – laut UNESCO eine Area of outstanding natural beauty – ist also zweigeteilt, halb polnisch, halb weißrussisch. Entlang dieser inneren Grenze bin ich mit Ewa – Naturschutzwartin, Zoologin und humorvolle Zeitgenossin – gewandert. Irgendwann auf diesem Waldgang unterhielten wir uns darüber, was geschähe, wenn – obgleich doch ein Ding der Unmöglichkeit – unsere GPS-Empfänger und Mobiltelefone gleichzeitig ausfielen. Was wäre, wenn wir dann jede Orientierung verlören und uns verirrten? Wie überlebt man im Nirgendwo? Was tun, wenn wir am Ende nicht mehr wüssten, ob wir uns auf der “diktatorischen” oder “demokratischen” Seite des Waldes befänden? Ich gebe zu, wir hatten viel Spaß. Sven Johne, Białowieża, 13. „Man könnte vielleicht da vorn am Dachsbau eine einfache Drahtschlinge legen. Aber auch wenn er da tatsächlich reingeht, ist das Betäuben des Gefangenen wohl alles andere als einfach. Auf dem Schädel steht ein Knochenkamm, an dem eine zentimeterdicke Kaumuskulatur ansetzt. Und die federt den Schlag ab. Man kann also eine solche Kreatur nur mit exzessiver Gewalt betäuben, also mehrmals mit einer Holzkeule auf den Kopf schlagen. Wenn er dann betäubt ist, muss man einen Holzspeer durch die Schwarte in die Rippenbögen stecken. Das Fett wird die Wunde wahrscheinlich sofort schließen, deshalb den Speer drehen und mehrfach nachstechen. Man müsste versuchen, die Lunge zu treffen. Alles in allem keine schöne Sache.“ less
Białowieża Forest / Belovezhskaya Pushcha is Europe’s last lowlands primeval forest—a large 900-square-kilometer remnant of what was once pan-European wilderness, today a protected nature reserve. No logging, no hunting, no people. But warning signs are present: since March 12, 1999, the outer boundary of NATO has run through this primeval forest, and since May 1, 2004, it has also marked the border of the European Union. The inner safety zone—according to UNESCO an “area of outstanding natural beauty”—is likewise divided in two: half Polish, half Belarusian. I hiked along this inner border with Ewa, a conservation officer, zoologist, and contemporary with a good sense of humor. Somewhere along this forest passage we discussed what would happen if—though an utter impossibility—our GPS receiver and mobile phones were to stop functioning at the same time. What would happen if we lost all sense of orientation and went astray? How does one survive in the middle of nowhere? What would happen if we ultimately no longer knew which side of the forest we were on, the “dictatorial” or the “democratic” side? I must admit that we had a great deal of fun. “Perhaps we could simply place a wire snare over there at the badger’s burrow. But even if he actually entered the trap, it would be anything but simple to stun the caught animal. There is a ridge of bone along the skull, connected to centimeter-thick chewing muscles. And this is what would cushion the blow. So it is only possible to stun such a creature with excessive use of force, such as clobbering it over the head with a wooden club. After it is unconscious, one would need to drive a wooden spear through the badger’s skin into the rib cage. The fat would probably close the wound immediately, which is why the spear would need to be turned and repeatedly driven home. One would have to try and puncture the lungs. All in all, definitely not an enjoyable task.” less
